Please read the information below which gives details of our PE and Sport Premium Funding and how we allocate the funding.

Rationale

The government has pledged £320 million per annum to support PE and school sport in primary schools. This funding is provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport. Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport on offer. The premium should be used to develop or add to the PE and sport activities in school and to build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years.

There are 5 key indicators that schools should expect to see improvement in the following:

1. The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity
2. The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
3. There is increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
4. A broader experience of a range of sports and activities is offered to all pupils and
5. Increased participation in competitive sport.

Sport Premium Funding 

For the academic year 2023-24 we have funding of £19,252. In addition, we have a cumulative carry forward of £32,878 from the previous academic years.

Position Statement for PE in school

At Barford Primary School, we aim to provide our children with a positive experience of physical activity, a strong understanding of health and well-being and opportunities to take part in competitive sport. This is achieved through a wide range of sports and physical activity as part of our carefully planned PE curriculum and an extensive extra-curricular club program. We believe that a combination of high quality physical education, active participation in clubs and carefully managed and modelled competitive sport can benefit every child. It improves children’s health and fitness, builds character and confidence, embeds values such as fairness, teamwork and respect and ultimately develops essential life skills.

Within the curriculum P.E. there is a balance of different areas of physical development including a variety of games, multi skills, gymnastics and dance.  In Key Stage 1, teaching focuses on developing fundamental movement skills, becoming increasingly agile, improving balance and co-ordination and working with others. Children also start to develop key physical movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching. These skills and are then developed further in KS2, where children learn how to use, link and apply them to make action sequences and complete specific tasks. Children also continue to compare and evaluate their own and others’ performances.

Our PE provision continues to go from strength to strength with extra provisions based on a combination of our expertise, pupil voice and staff consultation. A large number children have been involved in sports-based extra-curricular clubs and we continue to offer a wide range of clubs and experiences.

Government Guidance - PE and Sport Premium for Primary Schools

The Pupil Premium is allocated to schools with pupils on roll that are known to have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) at any time in the last six years; that are children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months; or that are children of service personnel. Schools have the freedom to spend the Pupil Premium, which is additional to the underlying schools budget, in a way they think will best support the raising of attainment for the most vulnerable pupils.

Free School Meals Eligibility

To be entitled to free school meals parents must be receiving one of the following support payments:

• Income Support
• Employment Support Allowance (Income Related)
• Income Based Job Seekers Allowance
• Guaranteed Pension Credit
• Child Tax credit and the assessed family income does not exceed £16,190. Parents receiving Working Tax Credit are not entitled regardless of the level of assessed income.
• Children of Asylum Seekers who receive support from Social Services are entitled as are those children who receive Income Support in their own right.

Parents are required to complete a Free School Meals Application form available from the school, or the form is accessible on this page or direct from the Birmingham website which can be found using this link.

Parents are not required to provide evidence of the benefit as checks will be made using data held by the Department for Education.

In making provision for socially disadvantaged pupils, we recognise that not all pupils who receive free school meals will be socially disadvantaged.  We also recognise that not all pupils who are socially disadvantaged are registered or qualify for free school meals so we therefore reserve the right to allocate the Pupil Premium funding to support any pupil or group of pupils the school has legitimately identified as being socially disadvantaged.

Pupil Premium is reviewed on an annual basis. The date for the next Pupil Premium Review is December 2024
